Insane Osprey Fishing Sequence

Osprey in the Rocky Mountains

The plan was to arrive at the lake for a morning of red-winged blackbird photography. I was awake way early, but decided to start up the coffee pot… and my day. I checked my weather app, wondering what yesterday’s snowstorm had wrought. When I saw it was only 9 degrees outside, the thought crossed my mind to back out! However, there were still a couple of hours of darkness remaining, and I hoped the morning sunshine would warm the air a bit, by the time we arrived.

The Truth Behind AI Osprey Images: How to Tell Them Apart

Osprey

There have been a rash of fake AI osprey pictures on social media lately. They are quite fantastic and almost impossible to identify as fake. However for a real osprey photographer, there is one telltale difference. All the osprey pictures showing up on the web lately show the great raptor with a perfect fish, perfect face with perfect eyes looking around at the scenery on his unexpected flight through the wilderness.

Exploring Monochrome: Canon A-1 and Ilford Delta 400

Ilford Delta Film by #swkrullimaging

This post has been a long time coming. Last winter I loaded my old Canon A-1 film camera with a roll of Ilford Delta 400 to see if I like it better than the venerable HP5 emulsion. In addition, I will be testing out my new yellow and orange filters to see what effect they have on this film stock.

Rocky Mountain Sports and Leisure

It's difficult to keep up with all the new developments in my world in 2026! In addition to all the excitement in the mountains from returning bird species and new four legged babies being born in the wild, I have managed to complete my historical fiction and romantic adventure trilogy with the publishing of my latest, The War On Wildlife. I have also recently launched a new online sports and leisure magazine, which I will be talking about in this post!

A Diamond in the Rough: Lumix DMC DS50

Lumix DMC DS50

Another awesome visit to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National WIldlife Reserve to test my newest acquisition, the Lumix DMC ZS50 camera with 24-720mm Leica glass! (I also took along my new Pentax IQ Zoom 105 WR film camera, but I haven't had those negatives processed yet, so that's a story for another time.

Eagles Nest

Bald Eagles Nest

I'm happy to report that our mother eagle has laid eggs and is on the nest. Papa eagle is working diligently to keep the family fed while one of them is in the nest at all times. I had hoped to get a closeup of him fishing upstream, but it seems there has been a change in the families habits, and they are now fishing somewhere downstream

A Monochrome Start to 2026

Monochrome Pikes Peak Region

It wasn't something that I intended, or set out to do, but it seems that monochrome photography might be a recurring theme in 2026. A renewed interest in black and white film can be partially attributed to a road trip to Denver, with an inevitable stop at Englewood Camera to look at the used gear. On that trip I discovered an FD 100-300mm manual focus lens at a price impossible to ignore. That particular lens just happens to emply a 58mm filter size, the exact size of my set of monochrome filters.
