I won’t lie, its been a tough summer for photography. I was called off the bench to work a few weeks at my old job, following sad news of the passing of one of my co-workers, and my Jeep developed a serious oil leak, which prevented me from going on a number of planned outings. Fortunately those issues have been resolved, and I’m back at the grindstone, churning out pictures and words.
My red-tailed hawk family has returned to my regular hiking trail, and I was fortunate to capture this series. Hopefully they have had offspring, and the rest of the summer will be filled with many more opportunities for exciting captures.
The Three Amigos appear to be healthy and are sprouting great racks with which to do battle during rut season this fall. However, I think these three are brothers who have been traveling together for many years, and whatever battles for the lady deer needed fought have long been settled. They don’t travel as a group during the mating season, but I’ve never seen them fight either.
Our osprey family returned to Eleven Mile Canyon, but I have yet to learn if there were offspring this season. There was one of the majestic sea hawks patrolling the canyon the other day, but it appears to be an adult. Juveniles have a white fringe around their back feathers, and this one appears to have solid colors only.
This season has not yielded the anticipated burrowing owl images, but cormorants and snowy egrets appear to be doing well at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.
Our Rocky Mountain Arsenal adventure this week contained an unexpected side trip, and bonus hummingbird opportunity. A bridge was out between Sedalia and Deckers, resulting in a long side trip along the North Fork of the South Platte. During high water season, this route could result in some fun motion blur captures of white water!

Many of the summer festivals are already behind us, such as Cripple Creek’s annual Donkey Derby Festival, and unfortunately I missed most of them for the afore mentioned reasons, but there are still a couple of fun events to attend before the snow flies. I’m looking forward to various Oktoberfest events, and of course the fall Leaf Fest in Cripple Creek. Perhaps I’ll even make it out to Breckenridge this autumn for the fall festival there. it’s been many years since I attended that amazing event!
