Exciting Day at the Eagles Nest

It was an exciting day at the eagles nest! Both adults were on the nest when I arrived at the canyon, so I stopped to snap as many pictures as I could before one of them flew off for their next meal.

As I expected, it didn’t take long for one of them to depart, but I was excited to see a little head sticking up over the rim of the nest! I knew from other years that it was about time to discover what the breeding season had produced, and was glad to see that that our nesting pair was successful with their hatch once again! Of course the question remained, how many eggs hatched this season!

However, I was eager to drive upstream to see if I could find our osprey pair so I left the eagles to their feeding for the time. I didn’t find our osprey today, but a lone great blue heron was standing guard over the pristine blue waters of the South Platte River. This handsome fellow standing on a rock out in the middle of the river didn’t seem to mind a distant photographer with a telephoto lens.

When I returned to the nest I was excited to discover two little heads, so I quickly grabbed my binoculars for a look. As I gazed carefully at the activity, it soon became apparent that there were three new eaglets this season, for mom and dad to feed! This particular breeding pair has proven to be quite good at caring for their little ones, and last year they raised three healthy young ones to flight. Hopefully that will be the case this year as well!

Here are a few more images from today’s adventure! I hope you enjoy them.
