My Author Copies Arrived

Elk Herd on a Beautiful Rocky Mountain Evening

Big day yesterday, the author copies of my newest book “Wildlife Photography in the Colorado Rockies” finally arrived! I was a bit nervous about it as there have been a lot of changes in my office configuration since my previous book was published! Since then I have upgraded my computer to Windows 11, put in a new high performance graphics card, and downloaded new drivers. It didn’t change my colors much, but I did notice that my monitor does match my printer much more accurately now. Wasn’t sure how that would affect my publishing experience at the big publishers!

Well, the good news is my copies came from Lulu Publishing perfectly and I made a nice Youtube video to show it to you! In the video you will see the cover and the content as I thumb through the book and describe it, so if you are interested, please just click the link and enjoy!

In the meantime, the book has been accepted at Barnes and Noble and I have learned how to go to their home page and request that they stock some copies in the retail stores. I don’t know how that will go yet, but I have hopes that they will at least put a few  copies into the “Local Interest” sections at our Colorado Front Range Stores! The book is of course available at my Amazon storefront.

Once again, please feel free to view my Youtube video about the book and visit one of my published material storefronts at Amazon and Lulu Publishing if you would like to purchase the book or peruse my other publications! My books are also available in eBook form if that is your preferred method of reading!

Wildlife Photography in the Colorado Rockies Now Available at Barnes & Noble

Elk Herd on a Beautiful Rocky Mountain Evening

I’m pleased to announce that my latest book, “Wildlife Photography in the Colorado Rockies” is now Available at Barnes & Noble! And much sooner that I expected 🙂 Anyway the book features all the major species including the large mammals such as bighorn sheep and elk, predators including fox and coyote, the great Colorado raptors including eagles, hawks and osprey and of course all the small birds and animals. In the book I reveal the equipment needed to get meaningful captures of the animals plus techniques for finding and photographing them.

The book includes almost 200 of my best wildlife pictures of all the species I’ve had the good fortune to encounter in the wild, from the lowly ground squirrel to the majestic bull elk and the diminutive sparrow to the fearsome bald eagle. Anyway, I hope you will consider picking up your own copy of this comprehensive publication!

Interesting Perspective

So I went for a hike through the mines at Goldfield Colorado yesterday, taking only my antique Canon A-1 film camera with me. I had a few exposures remaining on my roll of Ilford Hp5 ISO 400 monochrome film and was hoping to expend them on the old mines. I think I had about 12 pictures to take but by the time I had reached the turnaround point on the trail I still had 4 remaining.

Snowy Mines

The last part of the trail doesn’t really pass many highlights so I was wondering how I was going to use up four exposures. That quandary got me to thinking of my digital camera where four exposures would be nothing. Lol, there have been times when I accidentally pressed the shutter button and banged off eight frames of the ground, or my shoe, or the floor mat in Kevin’s car. It’s nothing on a bird photography outing in Eleven Mile to shoot 600 frames with 500 of them almost exactly alike.

So then I got to thinking how therapeutic it was to be just walking along looking for a real and distinct image with no real pressure to actually find one. I was just thoroughly enjoying the process of manual photography. I enjoyed loading the film by hand and cranking it into place. I enjoyed turning the lens to the aperture I wanted and setting the shutter speed dial to my desired value. I enjoy the satisfying slap of the mirror as the camera bangs it out of the way to expose the film.

And today I will enjoy going to the lab to turn in the film for developing and for the opportunity to browse the camera store looking for some little gizmo I might need. And I always enjoy chatting with the lab people about the whole process of shooting film, a skill nearly lost on today’s photographers.

I’m going to have a good day 🙂
