Quiet has returned to the mountains. The labor day holiday has marked the unofficial end of summer and thousands of tourists with their RV’s and trailers have headed back east to their homes on the great American flatlands. Wildlife are tentatively returning to their favorite feeding grounds, and they didn’t seem to worried about a lone photographer. In fact they seemed to recognize me from the quiet months I spent with them, prior to the summer invasion.

They peered out from a beautiful morning glow as I walked past, but quickly went back to their feeding on lush mountain grasses. Autofocus on my camera struggled a bit to identify the backlit animals in near darkness, but I was pleased with the final result.
I braced my camera on a tree branch and watched as they went about their routine, snapping pictures as I recognized attractive compositions.

Eventually the deer meandered off into the dense pine forest, and out of the range of my long lens. As I approached the summit of Little Grouse Mountain, a fair amount of action attracted my attention. Af first I assumed it was a flock of sparrows, but quickly discovered quite a group of chipmunks scurrying around 🙂 This brave little fellow wasn’t about to relinquish his perch on the mining equipment, where he was enjoying a meal of wildflowers.

Another one of the diminutive ground squirrels had found a safe space deep in a mine, and surrounded by chokecherry bushes. He eyed me suspiciously as he enjoyed one of the ripe berries for breakfast.
