Quite an Assortment

I’ve seen quite an assortment of critters at the Canyon lately! My latest trip was pretty much centered on the bald eagles, and a cute little family of Canada geese… there isn’t anything much cuter than the little yellow goslings following behind their mother! However recently I’ve seen cormorants, a white faced ibis, great blue heron, eagles, red-tailed hawks, beaver, deer, American dippers, robins, and a ton of little sparrows that are hard to identify without referring to Merlin, my bird ID app from Corning University. Anyway, I just wanted to put them all in one place in this cute little gallery 🙂 Also be sure to view the video of our rapidly growing eaglet!

Majestic Morning

Winter returned last night and I awoke to 15 degrees and 3 inches of new snow. I was tired and it took a few cups of java to get my eyes to open, but fortunately moment arrived at about the same moment that light began to spill over the mountains to the east. I really didn’t want to go out today but I knew that my author copies from Amazon of my Wildilfe Photography Book would be at the post office and the kitties were complaining incessantly about their food variety so out the door into the cold I went.

I decided to first drive out to the overlook and have a look at the aftermath of the storm on the mountains. As I wound my way out of town I caught a glimpse of the Sangre de Cristo Range in the distance and they were putting on quite a show in the storm clouds and fresh snow of last night’s weather. Of course I was ready with my digital camera and even my old Canon A-1 with most of a roll of Ilford B&W film. After all these years living in the mountains I know every overlook and every parking spot along the scenic byway and today I was going to stop at every one of them!

I also knew the view from the mining district over in Goldfield might be pretty cool today so I went over there too. I hope you enjoy a few of the pictures, I thought it was just magnificent this morning!

Sheltered Bucks

Hiked my mountain again looking for the dusky grouse, who once again remained hidden and all I  got was some good exercise climbing up to his domain. No pictures, no video, no view of the mountains… just exercise. Due to all the smoke and haze we haven’t been able to see the distant peaks of the Sangre de Cristo all summer. So anyway, I eventually got back to the trailhead and the mock gold mine put their as a park for people to use.

Buck in the Window

It was about the right time of day for the Three Amigos to come strolling through so I was trying to be quiet while keeping an eye out for my three favorite mule deer bucks. As I strode past the old blacksmith’s shop I was surprised to see one of the bucks peering at me from outside the building on the other side. I prepared for him to trot around the building to make his escape but he just kept staring at me through the opening.

So I readied my camera and snapped a couple of shots before moving on. I didn’t want to cause him to run because there is some barbed wire surrounding the compound and I didn’t want him to get injured. Then I spotted him peering out at me from the inside of the building! That in itself isn’t that amazing, all three of the bucks often use the building for shelter in the wintertime, but they usually bolt at the first sign of my presence.

Buck in the Window

The flies are just terrible up there after all the rain we’ve been having so I suspect he was in there seeking shelter from the bugs. And he wasn’t in any hurry to leave so I stopped to snap a few more of him through the side window and then the doorway. They aren’t the greatest pictures due to the relative darkness in the building, but I have to say they are still one in a million!

Getting Easier

Climbing the big hill to the top of the ridge seems to be getting easier every day now. In fact its getting to the point where I’m actually looking forward to it again 🙂 I have to admit for a while there it was a major undertaking to get out of my chair to get dressed in the morning! Sitting in my chair again this morning… my mind turned to the woods and I began to imagine the wildlife I might be missing out on, and that’s all it took.

Bunny Rabbit

Soon I was dressed and on my way to the trailhead with high hopes of catching a glimpse of my deer friends. Of course there is always the hope of seeing a black bear, but I’ve not seen a bear in the area in the three years I’ve been frequenting this trail. haven’t seen the elk in a while either and unfortunately all I did see was a glimpse of the Three Amigos, my three favorite buck mule deer that always travel together. They were moving fast down the mountainside ahead of me on their way to the watering hole I assume, and I had no chance of photographing them moving through the forest.

I took note of where I saw them cross the trail hoping that maybe they didn’t run too far past that point, but they were nowhere to be found when I finally arrived at that location. Much to my surprise though was the presence of this little cottontail casting a sideways look at me while I was scanning the hillsides for deer and bear. He was backlit and not in position for a detailed photo but I thought I’d give it a try, cute animals of all sizes are not a thing to pass up!
