Autumn in the Garden

Quite a day today… Made the big circle to Eleven Mile Canyon, all the way to Garden of the Gods, Mike’s Camera to drop off a roll of film and then back home! Saw raptors, deer, fall colors… and even made a stop at REI, my happy place 🙂 Snagged a good deal on a 5 degree sleeping bag while I was there… now I’m almost ready for a winter trip to the Sand Wash Basin to see the wild horses!

Autumn Does

I was hoping to see some bald eagles in the canyon, but the only life I saw there were a few American dippers, a couple of bunnys and a little herd of doe mule deer wandering around. Fortunately I was also prepared to shoot some fall colors as the canyon was spectacular this morning, with a bit of fog to accentuate the scene 🙂 I also brought my Canon A-1 film camera along to finish off my roll of color film for drop off later in day. We’ll  get to see those in a couple weeks.

By the time I made it to Colorado Springs I was glad I had all my polarizers along, they came in handy on every lens I had with me! There is nothing better than a polarizer to bring out those fall colors and tamp down the haze and bright highlights. Unfortunately autumn in the Garden is following the pattern that we are experiencing up here in the high country, many leaves already down but some still green. And there isn’t one smidgen of snow on the east face of Pikes Peak, so it is just a giant fairly uninteresting brown rock in the background.

Anyway, please enjoy a few more images from today’s shoot, and don’t forget to click the links after the pictures to shop for my latest books and the 2023 calendar!

Autumn in the District

So far it’s been a tough fall season in the high country Cripple Creek and Victor mining district for foliage pictures… the leaves are all changing at different times. The south face of Pikes Peak has already peaked and high winds have blown the best leaves off the trees. At the lower elevations some of the leaves are already bright orange while others are still green and some have just turned brown and withered.

Victor Colorado Autumn

But my efforts last week didn’t go completely unrewarded … I captured a few that I don’t already have in my portfolio that I would like to share 🙂 Unfortunately I accidentally left my polarizer behind along with my 24-105L lens, which was what the polarizer was attached to 😦 A couple would be nice pictures were ruined by the ubiquitous power lines that stretch across the landscape everywhere one looks up here, a shame for sure but I don’t know what could be done about it. I suppose hours of photoshopping could save a couple of them but I don’t have that kind of patience anymore.

Victor Colorado Autumn

Anyway, the day started with this pre-sunrise shot of a young doe mule deer, my favorite of the entire batch! My best mine picture was ruined by carelessness… I hand held the camera and forgot to check the shutter speed, resulting in too much motion blur to recover the image. Luckily I managed to make up for that loss with this capture of an old homestead set against golden aspen leaves, an image which I’ve been trying for years to capture in peak autumn! It’s kind of difficult to see, but there is also a very cool weather phenomenon going on in the background. Fog has filled the entire Arkansas River Valley while the beautiful Sangre de Cristo range juts high above the fog and haze!

That shot also looks great in winter so when the snow comes I’ll grab that one too 🙂 Please enjoy the gallery below and keep in mind that you can click each one to see a bigger version!

Primal Morning

Foggy Trees

It was an amazing foggy morning in the high country. When I first saw the wet pavement I considered just going back to bed but I know that it is this kind of day that often turns out to be the most incredible of all!  The morning started slowly with no wildlife showing themselves through the fog and the mist, only the trees were there to brave the weather.  I finished my hike soaking wet from the mist in the air and the wet grass, but my Ruggard rain cover kept the camera dry 🙂

I then decided upon a trip over to mine country in hopes of good shots of the head frames in the fog. The trees looked pretty cool there too and I got a couple of nice captures of the head frames, and then I spotted a lone doe standing on the mine tailings, probably feeding on some tall mountain grass that had grown through the ruins. I had to wait a while for her to look up, but the wait was worth it. I love this picture!

Coyote with Carcass

It was then I spotted motion in the distance… a closer look through the long lens revealed a coyote with a deer carcass. I assume he found the little deer in the ditch, the victim of  a car collision I assume. The big coyote was struggling to get his meal away from the road and back into the woods where he could eat in peace. Eventually he was able to drag it across the open field and settle in at the base of a hill in the tall weeds. He also had a shy friend that was considering joining in, but in the end the smaller animal decided to wait in the distance for a more opportune moment.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the images (at the end of the article)!

Morning Surprise

Cooper's Hawk

So the plan today was to drive to the upper parking lot at the trailhead and beat the ‘shroomer to the upper meadows to see if I might find the elk herd before they retreat to the coolness of the dense forest. And of course maybe get pictures of the dusky grouse flock before her dog had a chance to scare them into the forest. There were no grouse but as I neared the edge of the forest I heard a strange call that required investigation. I eventually spotted the bird in a tree calling down to me. I had seen these before but always thought they were some kind of meadowlark or something. Not a tiny bird but not a big one either, bigger than a robin though. Anyway, I snapped a few pictures until the bird took off, and I continued on through the forest to look for elk.

Mule Deer Fawn

Alas, there were no elk on the summit but there were a few cute mule deer, including a doe with her curious fawn in tow. They stopped briefly to check me out and kept on walking. With my long lens I was able to photograph from a distance beyond their danger zone.

Upon arriving at my desktop I loaded up the interesting new bird and discovered it to be a Cooper’s Hawk. The All About Birds site provided by Cornell Labs identified the raptor for me including a few interesting facts about their lifestyle. They are a forest dwelling bird that feeds on other birds and migrate in the winter along with osprey to South America. According to ABCBirds.org , “Like so many other species, Cooper’s Hawks are harmed by habitat loss, which may limit suitable breeding habitat. Collisions with glass windows, turbines, and poorly lit communications towers also account for many deaths.” Just one more reason that I’m against the wholesale adoption of all those stupid windmills that don’t supply enough power to justify their damage to the landscape.

That the hawks eat other birds could explain the apparent shortage of song birds on my mountain this season! Well anyway, there is at least one nesting pair living in the dark forest, and maybe more. Now I can’t wait to get back up there for some more captures!

Breaking A Long Dry Spell

Pretty good morning out in the woods today, got some nice shots of birds and even a buck mule deer on the run. I can usually take a few landscape photos if I don’t see wildlife, but we’ve had such haze and smoke this summer that the distant mountains are barely visible. I’ve been to Eleven Mile Canyon a couple of times with no success and finally decided to just shoot whatever I happen to find on my local hikes.

Well today I got to shoot a magpie in flight, the male mate of the western tanager I saw yesterday, a Clark’s nutcracker and even the previously mentioned buck with fuzzy antlers well along to full growth later in the summer. Anyway, I hope you enjoy today’s batch of images 🙂

The Three Amigos Emerge and a New Video

Mule Deer Bucks

I finally dared to pass through the dark forest to reach the higher peaks above the treeline on the other side. It was a beautiful morning, warm with no wind, I had nothing else pressing to do and I just went for it. I was hoping to see the dusky grouse that the mountain is apparently named for but I had no such luck. Don’t think I spotted a grouse up there last year either. In fact, I didn’t see anything up there except the grass and the old mines. But on my way down I spotted a deer on top of the ridge looking down at me so I snapped a picture which revealed a buck with fuzz covered antlers . Then another deer appeared so I stopped and attached the 1.4x teleconverter for a little better view. Finally a third buck appeared and I realized I was being treated to a view of my favorite deer trio, “The Three Amigos” as I call them. These three bucks have been roaming the countryside on my favorite mountain for several years now and I was delighted to see them still safe and together.

I wasn’t going to shoot a video but seeing them inspired me to flip the switch on my camera to video mode and shoot a few seconds of footage 🙂 I hope you enjoy the video as much as I do! Unfortunately I didn’t get a good still image of all three together because by the time I got done with the filming they weren’t standing together anymore, but I did get a good shot of two of them looking down from the mountain with great curiosity!

Pure Joy

That’s about all I can say about my morning of photography. The title came to me when I was filming a little vesper sparrow singing his heart out on the summit of Grouse Mountain. Click the link to the video here if you would like to experience two minutes of joy :)There was also a little house wren at the parking lot singing an equally beautiful song but I was so busy shooting stills that I forgot to film it. I was glad when I encountered the little sparrow that gave me a chance to record the joyous song 🙂

To round out my joyful morning I also encountered a pair of fox kits playing hard at sunrise. I was lucky that one of them managed to run right toward me during his play session and I got some of the best fox captures ever! Then a red-tailed hawk left his perch high on a power pole to also fly right at me and an elk cow stopped to pose for me. Finally a herd of mule deer wandered past in the warm light of the morning sun and I felt that I had earned a nice cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll at the Gold Camp Bakery 🙂

Definitely a Wild Day

I have to say… today turned out way better than I thought! First I couldn’t even figure out what to do with my day, so I just sat in my chair with my coffee until the sun was already way too high in the sky. I had some things I wanted to do but I knew there would be way too many people in the mountains on this holiday weekend. So I found myself giving up on doing anything when I finally decided to just take a little hike and check in on the art gallery in Victor.

Fox at Play

A last minute tip from a buddy revealed the location of a fox family in my area, so I went there first and spotted a couple of what appeared to be the two adult foxes still out enjoying the sunshine. I’ll have to try to get there earlier one of these days to see if I can catch the pups before they duck back down into the den for the day. I didn’t stay long, but I did shoot a couple of different angles to try to get the best light, and managed to get a couple captures that I like including this one which is my favorite of the day.

Then it was onward to my hiking trail near Victor

Mule Deer Doe

where I spotted a few deer, a couple of does and a buck. Fortunately they didn’t bolt when they saw me, just calmly wandered through a sunny patch before heading over the ridge into the dense forest.

I went without success this evening to try to view the fox family again, but I was fortunate to witness a red-tailed hawk flyby within easy camera range. He flew past the wrong way first, giving me a chance to check my settings, a 2000th of a second at f/8 with auto ISO with +1.3 exposure compensation turned out to be the right mix! Out of almost 200 exposures, this one (below) turned out to be my favorite. The wings weren’t in the bright sunlight but I captured the catch lights in his eyes perfectly! This one will definitely find it’s way onto my wall somewhere!

Bluebird of Happiness

After a week of miserable weather including three and a half feet of snow, on this morning the temperature was warm and the sky was blue. The deer and the birds all seemed happy and I got my first glimpse of the “Three Amigos” for the first time in months! Looks like they are starting to get a new set of antlers and doing well! I also caught a glimpse of our red-tailed hawk pair dancing in the sky, unfortunately far beyond the power of my 400mm of focal length.

As I made my way up the steep hill to the summit of Grouse Mountain I could hear song birds singing and I hoped I would get a chance to photograph a some. A pair of mountain bluebirds frolicked together in the grass and eventually landed on a downed tree near me. I put the camera on the monopod and followed the happy pair as they chased each other around the log pile.

On the way back down I stopped to film my very first Instagram Reels. Looks like I have a few things to learn about the process but I’m excited to give it a try. As it turns out, I get the most response from my pictures there and I’m approved for monetization, something that will never happen with my Youtube channel.

Anyway, I have this nice gallery of images from today, hope you enjoy them!

Majestic Morning

Winter returned last night and I awoke to 15 degrees and 3 inches of new snow. I was tired and it took a few cups of java to get my eyes to open, but fortunately moment arrived at about the same moment that light began to spill over the mountains to the east. I really didn’t want to go out today but I knew that my author copies from Amazon of my Wildilfe Photography Book would be at the post office and the kitties were complaining incessantly about their food variety so out the door into the cold I went.

I decided to first drive out to the overlook and have a look at the aftermath of the storm on the mountains. As I wound my way out of town I caught a glimpse of the Sangre de Cristo Range in the distance and they were putting on quite a show in the storm clouds and fresh snow of last night’s weather. Of course I was ready with my digital camera and even my old Canon A-1 with most of a roll of Ilford B&W film. After all these years living in the mountains I know every overlook and every parking spot along the scenic byway and today I was going to stop at every one of them!

I also knew the view from the mining district over in Goldfield might be pretty cool today so I went over there too. I hope you enjoy a few of the pictures, I thought it was just magnificent this morning!
