The Amigos Return

For many of you who have been following my blog for many years, the Three Amigos are a familiar sight. But after a long cold winter, it always brings my heart joy to see them in the spring, happy, healthy, and still together after almost a decade of following them.

Three Amigos

I took the long hike yesterday, the one that takes me deep into the high country, beyond where most people go. And certainly on this cold windy morning, there were no people anywhere on the mountain.

As I made my way through the valley, I spotted three deer foraging on top of the ridge. I suspected it was my favorite trio, the Three Amigos, so I trained my big lens on them and snapped away.

I watched as they continued along the ridge, spreading out as they meandered in search of green grass. I assumed they would continue on over the top of the summit and disappear, so I continued my hike, taking a quick look every once in a while to check their progress.

Much to my surprise, they changed direction and headed down into the valley from which I had just come. So I decided to take a break and just sit for a while and enjoy the scenery. The aspen trees are starting to fill out with their summer raiment, and the deer would soon seek cover from the bright Colorado sun as the morning wears on.

There is a fourth buck who joins them sometimes, and he was with them on this day. Other times he can be found wandering out on his own.

I guess after all these years, the trio has gotten used to me with my big camera, and they don’t mind me getting a few close up portraits of their activities.

Green-tailed Towhee

Deer weren’t the only critters enjoying the beautiful morning. As the bright sunshine warmed the air above the treeline, birds began to stir, and the valleys were soon filled with bird song. This green-winged towhee seemed particularly joyful about the beautiful calm morning, and stayed to serenade me as I walked by.

I was also visited by a Vesper Sparrow and our resident red-tailed hawk.
