Highlights from Steampunk

Highlights of the Steampunk Festival

We had our first Steampunk Festival sponsored by the Black Monarch in Victor over the weekend and it was a great success! The town was absolutely packed with steampunk styles and the festivities lasted well into the night all the way through Sunday! I’m not much of a Steampunker, but I did want to try out my Godox V1 outdoors and I have to say considering the brutal heat and direct sunlight it did pretty well, managing to even out the bright highlights and fill the dark shadows! However if I were actually being paid to shoot an outdoor session in bright light I’d probably consider using my AD200, or maybe even dual AD200’s in the dual head pack. I used the camera and flash both on manual and adjusted the output manually. Most of the day though I had to use the flash on full 1/1 power.

The festival featured street performers, live bands and vendors in tents lining the streets with merchandise such as jewelry, art and clothing. I happened to be there during the acrobatics show and am sad to say I couldn’t make the fashion show… but I hope you enjoy a few photographic highlights!

Two Birds

Wanted to test out my new vlogging microphone, I’ve been bumbling along all this time just using the on board mic on my 70 and 90D Canon bodies, which is fine unless it’s windy. So I ran across this nice RODE hot shoe mic at Best Buy for a good price and decided to give it a whirl!

I also needed a new intro to my Patreon channel, so I climbed Hell Hill with the whole mess and set up the equipment at the mine park on the summit to film the video. And after only about 27 takes I finally managed a version that didn’t make me want to throw up. I’m really not very good at being on that side of the camera 😦

Mountain Blue Birds

So I got my two birds with one stone as they say, the microphone worked splendidly and the video is published… But that’s not the end of this story! On the hike back down I spotted these two cute little mountain blue birds to add to the title of this post… Sometimes I’m so clever I can’t stand myself 😉

While I was at it I added Models and photographer VIP tiers to my Patreon channel along with a new benefit, a once a month live photo shoot event with the eligible models and photographers. Trying to think outside the box 🙂 I wanted to let models join for free but Patreon wouldn’t let me so I had to put $1 in that field. Too early to tell of course, but I’m hopeful that this is a good idea 🙂 I’ve always been afraid of doing something like this because of the liability, but now I have insurance through the PPA so I am all set to try it !!!

Still putting the finishing touches on the model portfolio branch of this business… I have the liability and equipment insurance squared away with the PPA, contracts and releases are printed up and my channel here is ready to go!

The last details today were the testing out of a couple pieces of new equipment. I recently acquired a quality microphone for the vlogging camera so today I hooked it up and dialed in the settings. I have to say it sounds really nice!!!

I also just added a third flash unit, my second Godox AD200. This one came with the standard speedlight head, and a bare bulb head with a globe diffuser. I also purchased nother 32 inch softbox for nice expansive soft light if needed. Also with that unit comes a barn door modifier and several colored gels

So today I hooked all that up and tested it out with my transmitter, outstanding results 🙂

So I think all I have left now is t find some models who need a portfolio and want to star in the show!

Well that was easy, recently noticed that many of my favorite blog posts had been archived and are unavailable. So a quick review of the help section gave me the idea to attempt to add an archives section, which I thought was going to be a major undertaking. However it turned out to be quite easy using a free widget that is provided to the business theme my site uses 🙂 So now if you would like to see posts that have been archived you can easily go to the bottom of my main site page and review them by month and year!

Swimsuit Model

Speaking of archives, while technically this isn’t a blog archive it is definitely one of my favorite mental archives 🙂 One of my first attempts at photographing models and one of my favorite images of all time! This one was of course captured back in the days of film, long before instant feedback on a digital screen and long before there was such a thing as ISO 3200 available to capture images like this in the waning light of dusk and an approaching rainstorm. I shot this one with 100 speed Fuji Reala film and an off camera flash unit with a gold reflector. I hope you like it as much as I do 🙂

Don’t forget to visit my site for recent blog posts with pictures and also my new section at the bottom of the menu pointing to my archives!
