September is already here, and the high-country leaves are flashing their first hints of autumn. On yesterday’s photo adventure into Eleven Mile Canyon, the temperature plummeted to a crisp 42 degrees mid-canyon. I’ll admit, I didn’t hesitate to fire up the heat in the old Jeep.
I always enjoy watching these two horses at the beginning of the adventure, but usually I can’t get a good picture of them .
Yesterday I was fortunate that they happened to be grazing together, right in front of the old homestead.
The adult ospreys have already begun their long journey southward. I used to think these majestic “sea hawks” always flew all the way to South America. However, after doing a bit of modern AI-assisted digging, I discovered that our western ospreys rarely cross the equator—most settle for the winter in Southern Texas or Mexico. Even so, traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles on a single set of wings is a daunting journey.
After the adults leave in late August, the young ones are left behind to fend for themselves. They will spend the remaining warm days of early autumn flying up and down the canyon, strengthening their wings while learning how to catch fish. Last week I watched this juvenile splash into the water three times, with nothing to show for it. Looks like he’s doing a little better this week!
We were also fortunate to see at least one bald eagle standing sentry over the canyon. Once the breeding season is over, usually in July, the adult bald eagles disappear for a few months. Young eagles complain for a while, before leaving the area themselves.
