Winter Wonderland 2026

The holidays are behind us, and I’m getting back into my photography routine. This weeks adventure took me to Eleven Mile Canyon, in search of our bald eagle pairs. Unfortunately I was only able to capture one sighting, but a new winter storm has arrived in the area, and I was able to capture a few snowy images of the early winter landscape.

Bald Eagles

I watched and waited in the cold for about 15 minutes for this fellow to dive for a fish. He apparently decided to fly upstream to a better spot, and a fishing image escaped me once again. I am quite happy with the view of the wings on this particular capture. It’s an unusual position to capture, especially when the wings don’t cover the eyes 🙂

Snow ha just started to fall on the Pike National Forest, as the first flakes begin to cover barren aspen stands. I love to be out in these conditions, when there are no other people around, and simple subjects become mysterious ghostly figures in the distance

Snow in the Mountains
Magpie in Snow

It seems the wildlife isn’t quite as jumpy when the snow is falling. This beautiful magpie paid little attention to me as I photographed him as he foraged for his morning meal. Normally I photograph birds at a 2000th of a second shutter speed, but I switched to my large animal 1000th of a second configuation in the limited light on this cloudy snowy morning.

I’m also pleased to announce that Episode Eleven – Hope Eternal, of my free to read serial novel, The War On Wildlife has been published on my Substack page. This episode marks an important chapter in the mistreatment of wild animals in western states when Cody Roberts, a Montana hunter runs a young wolf down with his snowmobile and torments it for hours in a local bar. This case is still pending, and will be heard in March this year.

Currently there are little protections from cruelty for wild animals, and there was another horrific incident this season in Wyoming. Three men roped and dragged a young moose, while each took a turn at riding him before killing him. I urge each of you to contact your lawmakers to urge them to classify all animals as sentient beings and provide them with approapriate protection from cruelty.
