June Wildlife Photography Newsletter

May was a great month for wildlife photography in the Pikes Peak region. Many birds have returned to the Pikes Peak region, including mountain blue birds, many species of sparrow, hummingbirds, swallows and much more. We are still looking forward to the return of the snowy egret, which we have yet to spot this season.

Birds aren’t the only critters enjoying the warm springtime sunshine, deer and elk have also returned to the nutritious grasses of the high elevation mountains and valleys.

On one of my hikes I noticed this beautiful girl peering out from the bushes at me, and was lucky enough to be able to get focused on her face before she ambled off to join her friends higher on the mountain.

This beautiful red-tail hawk returns every season, and is looking well. He looked a bit disheveled for a while, and sounded a bit under the weather, but his familiar screech is back and he appears to be done taking crap from the crows. I don’t think I’d want to be in the predicament this bird has found itself in!

Great Blue Heron

Great blue heron seem to have an especially good winter. We didn’t have to wait long to see one in every place we have visited lately! I especially like this image of this heron buzzing the pelicans over this pristine mountain lake.

Our bald eagle family is doing well, and we are looking forward to the young ones starting to realize that they have wings! Sometime in June they will work up the courage to take flight and learn to hunt and fish for themselves. Mom and dad will continue to assist them for a while, but will eventually leave the nest and force the young ones to fend for themselves. Before winter, the eaglets will leave the nest, never to return.
