For the eighth year in a row, ever since I moved here in 2017, my buddy the rough legged hawk has returned to his winter hunting ground.

There’s not a whole lot to say about it, other than he likes to hunt in the open space just south of my house. Either he is used to me, or he just isn’t afraid of people, but fortunately for me he allows me to get close while he goes about his hunting.
Here he is diving under the snow after a rodent. I don’t know if he caught something or not, but he was under the snow for a while before coming back up for air. I’m sure he was under the snow long enough to devour something small!


As a bonus, I also got a nice shot of this young buck mule deer 🙂
