Back in the Photography Saddle

Finally, back in the photography saddle again. It’s been a long tough spring and summer fraught with problems and mechanical failure, but I finally have some results to show for all the trepidation. I drove my Dodge Ram almost 30 years without it ever having to be towed. Well there may have been a couple of incidents I don’t remember, but it has been rare. Until this year that is. Since the beginning of the year I’ve had two wheel bearings go out, a differential, two flat tires and maybe more.

So when I felt I couldn’t trust the truck anymore, I bought a used jeep. Then of course the jeep had a differential and numerous seals fail, which I had fixed, followed by the failure of another axle seal. Fortunately, none of the jeep repairs required a tow, and I think I’m safely back on the road.

That was just the vehicle problem. My beloved Canon A-1 failed and had to be repaired, followed by the failure of three used Minolta bodies I had picked up in hopes of finding a reliable film camera. Then another one of my Canon bodies failed, and I was about to give up. However this week I got a roll of Kodak Ektar 100 back from the lab, and my Canon A-1 seems to be working perfectly. I’m about half way through a roll of film in my Canon EOS-7, but I’m confident that it is working perfectly as well.

Victorian Coffee Shop

So when I got my A-1 back, I put the aforementioned roll of Ektar in it and wandered about Victor, shooting colorful scenes befitting a roll of film advertised to be a suitable c-41 color substitute for the venerable Ektachrome of old.

I spotted people enjoying their morning brew inside this beautiful coffee shop on the main drag in Victor, and stopped for the shot. I was pleased to properly expose the store front, while also casting a glimpse of the warm glow of incandescent lighting inside.

This angle shows the people inside a bit better, although a closer look at the details with Photoshop shows a bit more of the action inside. It didn’t take long for the people inside to notice me standing outdoors with the camera, but unfortunately I wasn’t ready with the exposure and focus when they all waved and smiled, much more enthusiastic about being the subject of my pictures than I expected!

Here are a few more of my favorite images, taken with this test roll of Ektar.

Two Decades of Digital Photograph

If you enjoy the content and would like to support this site, please consider making a purchase from my extensive library of books and wall art. In addition to a number of photography related books, I have also begun a series of novels based on the fictional life of my main character Caleb and his friends as they work to save wildlife through the real life tales of some of America’s most famous wild animals.

Spirit of the Wolf is the first in the series, and is the story of the most famous Alpha Wolf of all time. Wolf 06 of Yellowstone National Park. The second in the series is called Thundering Hooves, the story of Colorado’s Sand Wash Basin wild mustang herd.

Many of the images used in my blog posts can be purchased as prints on glossy metal or acrylic sheets ready for hanging, stretched canvas, and traditional matting and framing. Many cool tech and household gift items can also be purchased, including coffee mugs, apparel, tapestry and much more!
