Amazing Manitou Lake

Osprey at Manitou Lake

Another amazing day at Manitou Lake, Colorado… Much to our surprise the osprey showed up again. We saw them on our first visit to the lake in the spring and have not seen them since. He put on a pretty good show too, circling overhead many times and making one unsuccessful dive into the water. He came to the lake twice and I felt bad for the little guy when he didn’t get a fish either time 😦

I finally got a good picture of one of the black mink that we have seen occasionally while observing the lake, although it was very early and there wasn’t much light so there was quite a bit of digital noise to deal with. The trip also yielded two new bird species for my ebird account at Cornell Labs, a Solitary Sandpiper and a cute little Pine Siskin which I had never even heard of!

Pine SiskinWe also saw the usual great blue heron, a cute little bunny, chipmunks a cooperative robin and of course the western grebe floating in the middle of the lake well beyond the 560mm focal length that is my maximum range. We met another photographer who informed us that a moose cow had been in the area and we searched in vain for the great horned owl that other ebird users claim is there. This lake never ceases to amaze me with it’s abundance of bird species. The places I usually hike might have three our four different kinds of birds, but I have seen at least a dozen new species this summer at the lake.

With all the excitement today, I am eager to return… perhaps tomorrow so stay tuned!
