A New God

There is a new god for our time, a god who would have you believe that up is down, down is up and that science and morality are on his side. Like all gods he demands unwavering faith in that which cannot be seen or felt. This god tolerates no dissent, there can be no disbelief, no discussion, no opposing ideas… only obedience. Disbelievers must be silenced by whatever means necessary, shouted down, publicly shamed, litigated out of existence, beaten or jailed.

Only this new god and his new religion are not new at all… He was the god of the middle ages when the world was flat and the universe revolved around it, and was the god of the 70’s when we were told in science class that a new ice age was coming. He was the god of the Spanish Inquisition, the guillotines the Soviet Gulags, the German concentration camps, the Cambodian Killing Fields and the ISIS beheadings. This god is the Father of Lies from the ancient times who’s many incarnations have all been based on lies. The big lie that everyone should be equal, that all lifestyles should be equal, that all belief forms should be equal.

Of course the world doesn’t work that way… some have more, some have less, some work hard, some are lazy, some are more intelligent, some are less. So then in order for everyone to be equal some must be taken from those who have and given to those who have not and rarely is the case that those who work hard are going to willingly give their assets to those who are lazy. Therein lies the problem, those in power must step in, shut down dissent and take by force that which is deemed undeserved by it’s rightful owner. And that’s when people die, up to 300,000 in the Inquisition, 20,000,000 at the hands of Stalin, 6,000,000 Jews in WWII, probably 2,000,000 more at the hands of the Khmer Rouge and countless more in Africa.

Now in America the big lie and even worse is being revived before our very eyes, with significant numbers utterly given over to living a lie. The lie that money can be stolen from the rich and given to the poor, that competition is evil and there can be no winners and losers, that men can compete against women in the Olympics and no one will think it unfair, that people who are unwilling to work should be paid a living wage, that boys don’t need a father, that teenage boys can shower with girls and nobody will notice, that a baby can be murdered on it’s way out the birth canal and that the so called doctors should not be punished, that it is moral to provide sanctuary for criminals at the expense of law abiding citizens, that our wildlife can be slaughtered to extinction with military grade weapons and the planet won’t suffer, that someone should go to jail for participating in dog fighting while it is legal for someone else to set his hounds upon a defenseless wild animal left starving for days while caught in a vicious leg hold trap.

This new alternate reality is simply not real… which of course is why there can be no discussion, why laws have to be passed to reclassify free speech as hate speech, why scientists must be jailed for postulating their own theories and solutions to problems, why lawsuits are filed to force people to adhere to another’s belief system, why college students must be shielded from opposing points of view, why a whole generation of our young are unable to deal with reality, hiding instead in safe spaces where they will never be challenged. It is why our God Given Rights, enshrined in the constitution must be continually eroded and eventually destroyed.

The words of the prophet are becoming fulfilled in our time, โ€œ…For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man…โ€. Of course the remaining verses of Romans Chapter 1 are an even greater indictment of our time… for those who can face the truth.

If we as a nation continue down the path of worship of this new god we will surely be condemned to repeat the mistakes of the past, which is always the final plan of this false lying sneaky god. Death and destruction are his highest achievement and he relishes in the suffering. But there is hope, also the words of another prophet of the one and true God, โ€œIf my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.โ€.

Grandeur

Rough legged hawk Soaring Above the Rockies

Sometimes in the morning I stop to just thank God for the grandeur of the surroundings that He has blessed me with. These majestic mountains, the beautiful wildlife and the peacefulness of this incredible wilderness. And this morning I was doing exactly that when I noticed this rough legged hawk soaring high above me.

It is a good omen I think, a sign that the almighty was listening to my grateful prayer ๐Ÿ™‚ It is also my prayer that through my pictures others will see His handiwork and appreciate the wonderful gift that He has given us in this amazing planet with all it’s wonders.

Majestic Snowcapped Sangre de Cristo

Majestic Snowcapped Sangre de Cristo

The Wall

No not the border wall… a different wall. I expected worse this morning after a night of snow and the sound of the wind thundering across the high plains of the southern Rockies. Nevertheless, the alarm was set for 05:30 and it was going to stay that way. The coffee pot was ready to brew, the camera ready to go and the hike set.

Sangre de Cristo Alpenglow

Sangre de Cristo Alpenglow

Sipping my morning coffee and getting the weather stats I discovered that the wind was still strong enough to bring the windchill down to -1 and it looked like all I was going to be able to see was fog. However a few minutes later when it began to lighten a bit I noticed that I could just barely make out the snow capped peaks of the Sangre de Cristo. Big Dog was ready to go so I bundled up and headed out the door.ย  As we headed down the trail I noticed that the alpenglow sunrise was already taking effect in the sky and I was dismayed to realize that I hadn’t accounted for the sun rising about 15 minutes earlier than the last time I tried this! So we had to run a couple of miles to make up for the miscalculation and still nearly missed the show. On the way I snapped a couple of sub par compositions just in case I managed to miss the entire thing from the top of the ridge ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Deer on the Mountain

Pair of mule deer on the mountain

Fortunately we arrived on the mountainside in time to witness a pretty cool sunrise. The Sangre were a beautiful red wine color, the color that Spanish explorer Antonio Valverde y Cosio must have seen when he named this range the “Blood of Christ” mountains. After making sure I captured the scene to the west I noticed that the rising sun in the east and pink glow on the morning clouds made a beautiful backdrop for some aspen trees and a rustic country fence. I was really cold and wanting to get back home, but we had to stop and explore that subject for a while. After we froze our butts long enough the show was over and we turned around to head home. As we strode through the frozen landscape I noticed a couple of spots on the mountainside across the valley that looked new. Upon closer inspection I determined that they were actually a small herd of deer and although I could not get very close they did turn the usually boring mountainside into a worthy composition ๐Ÿ™‚

As we made the return trip I was still reveling in the magnificence of the Sangre de Cristo sunrise. The Sangre de Cristo range is called a fault block mountain range, a rugged wall of mountains rising directly up from the plains much like the Tetons in Wyoming and the Sierra Nevada in California. As a result of their formation by risingย  or falling cracks in the earth’s crust there are no foothills, just an imposing massive impenetrable wall of mountains.

When standing in the presence of such beauty it is impossible for a spiritual minded person to neglect the Creator of such majesty. While considering the towering wall formed by the “Blood of Christ” mountains I began to ponder another wall created by the Blood of Christ, the wall between the carnal and the spiritual.

Lately many in the media and social media feel themselves to be eminently qualified to comment on and gleefully insult concepts they know nothing about. “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” That they know nothing about what they are saying is not their fault. They cannot comprehend the other side of the “wall” because they have never seen the other side and knowledge of it has been closed to them. Fortunately there has been provided one and only one door for mankind to pass through and obtain access to the other side of that wall.

ย โ€œEnter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” The Sangre de Cristo is the narrow gate that few will discover. Only those who have accepted that truth will experience the other side of the great divide separating the spiritual from the carnal. Until then those who have not passed through remain unqualified to comment on Christianity, the scriptures and the faith of the believers that they so despise. In fact they are not even qualified to read the scriptures… they can try but they will read in vain, without understanding. My hope is that the blind leaders of the blind will honestly seek answers to the questions they so glibly and hatefully attempt to answer, and open the door to the Savior who stands ready to open the narrow gate to all who truly want to enter,Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”

Dead Gods

I have to admit… I have been fuming since hearing the most ignorant comment on TV a couple of weeks ago about God that I have ever heard. You know the one, the comment comparing hearing from Jesus to mental illness. Speaking to God is OK according to the talk show, but hearing from God is a mental illness.

Sangre De Cristo Sunset

Beautiful Colorado Sunset

First of all, God is in no need of hearing from us. Our words and prayers He has already known from eternity and the Painter of Sunsets and the Creator of Everything is never unprepared. It is we who are in need of hearing from Him, Who was and is and is to come. He is our God, our King, our Teacher and also the Great Father to whom we cry out Abba Father. What good would earthly fathers be who only listen to their children without answering, without teaching, without providing guidance and earthly sustenance ?

In fact though, the Hollywood elites do not want to hear from God. They use their high places in society to pile up monuments to ignorance with their flapping gums at the feet of their dead gods whom they know can neither see nor hear, and are especially unable to respond to their foolish words and evil deeds.

People of true spiritual knowledge know that God does not often cross the Divide to speak to us directly. He has provided in advance all we need to know in the Bible, which we refer to as the Word of God. It is written, โ€œIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.โ€. And also, โ€œAnd the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.โ€ . We know that God, Jesus and the Word are all one, inseparable and invaluable to the success of a society.

Those with wisdom and understanding know to diligently study that Word so that when we pray for His will, His words that are already inscribed in our hearts can be called upon at the right moment to give us answers about the right thing to do and say. I submit that there would be far less mental illness if people would turn to the Word of God and away from the incessant chatter of the ignorant.

A Culture of Cruelty

That a young man would carry a rifle into a school and gun down his classmates should come as no surprise to anyone living in this century. We live in a culture that celebrates disrespect, violence and cruelty. Unfortunately we are once again witness to the end result of this culture of cruelty with yet another school shooting.

One of the common threads in the many modern trails of death is an early start in a life of violence with cruelty to animals. We read that Nikolas Cruz entertained himself by shooting squirrels with BB guns, and trying to kill or maim rabbits by ramming a stick down holes where he knew rabbits were nesting. Unfortunately there are few protections for wildlife. If his early fascination with animal cruelty had involved cats or dogs, perhaps he might have been flagged sooner as a mentally deranged individual in need of counseling or incarceration.

Which of course begs the question… what makes people who have fun hurting wildlife better than people who enjoy hurting cats and dogs? Wildlife feel pain and are intelligent sentient beings just as domestic animals are, yet there are entire industries developed around the maiming and killing of wild animals. Every day I see pictures of some fool proudly grinning for the camera while some poor creature has spent hours, maybe even days, pacing around a blood soaked perimeter in terror because it is legal to set snares for predators. Why should we believe the person who does this is any more sane than the one who sets kittens on fire for the fun of it? Both are enjoying the suffering of a helpless animal, yet one is locked up for animal cruelty while the other is celebrated and may even get his own cable TV show one day. We are pretty sure the crimes of the one are going to escalate into worse acts of violence, yet how are we so sure that the one who tortures wildlife won’t graduate into worse violence?

It all boils down to one thing, there are too many in our time who do not understand the difference between right and wrong. And the problem is not limited to the minuscule numbers who commit the school murders, evil is pervasive in all segments of society from children in schools to the highest echelons in our government. Those in charge pass and defend laws that make it legal for hunters to send hounds in to tear coyotes to pieces and be torn to pieces by wolves while at the same time banning dog fighting. And they even have the gall to force the taxpayers to cover the financial losses if the so called hunter’s dogs are killed. We have leaders of entire popular movements jumping up and down and screaming about gun control while at the same time advocating for the right to stab a baby in the head on his or her way out of the birth canal, hypocrites.

In these modern progressive times, those who are qualified to teach right from wrong are mocked and shouted down, kicked out of office or sued for their faith which is ridiculed on popular television shows by the revered talking heads who are devoid of any wisdom or understanding. God, right and wrong, the Ten Commandments and prayer are banned from the schools while our children are taught to decide for themselves the difference between right and wrong. Why should we be surprised when children choose evil over good when evil is celebrated over good in the media or the video games that they are glued to every day of their lives? It’s time for us to get a grip on the evil that is overcoming this nation. It’s time to start rooting out evil where ever it can be found, no matter how high the perch from which it is preached. In order to do so however, we cannot forget the Source of the Good and also the source of the evil.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Turning Point

One of those memories from one year ago popped onto my Facebook today, it was a great memory of a great day, breakfast with my beloved cousin whom I hadn’t seen for too many years to even count. However the good part of that day was overshadowed by the memory of the rest of the day after I received a call from a friend who told me, “Steve, all hell has broken loose here.”, a terrible day in which several lives were irreparably altered, and not for the better. It was also the day that resulted in me having the two dogs that I wasn’t planning on or prepared for by any stretch of the imagination. However as you can imagine, these two beautiful doggies have worked their way into my heart and now they go with me everywhere. One riding shotgun in the passenger seat of my truck and the other standing on the console in the middle making sure there is nothing unusual lodged in my right ear or my mouth and nose ๐Ÿ™‚

I had to take a part time job unloading trucks to make ends meet and it is a job that is physically difficult for people 40 years my younger. Unfortunately a few months ago I sustained a serious injury from which I have not been able to recover and is getting worse. Each day at work is a new lesson in pain and fatigue and I am sure I’m not going to be able to endure it much longer. And Son Boy is starting to look so sad when I have to work, like he knows. I hate leaving them behind, hate taking time away from writing and photography. And I have been praying “Please God, don’t make me go back there…”, pleading and begging the Almighty to have mercy on me and my little family of fur babies.

On the upside, the economy must be turning around, my stock photography sales have been picking up substantially. After years of terrible sales I have actually made more selling than I have working in the last few days… and I think that too is a sign that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Also I had a vivid dream the other night of a house in the country… one of those dreams that you just have a feeling is significant, a sign even perhaps. And after a long time of feeling repulsed by writing and out of inspiration for my photography, ideas are starting to come to me and the words are once again flowing onto the page… Every storm has to end and my storm that has washed away a home, a wife to cancer, a family, a career and all my savings and plans for retirement and almost everything but my faith, has lasted a decade.ย  It is a storm that I am hoping will soon be on the other side of the turning point.

“He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.” Psalm 107:29-30

Amazing Day

Amazing end to an amazing day, fascinating how things turn out sometimes… but I’ll get to that later. The day started out great when I decided to explore a new trailhead that the troll doesn’t know about and I found a magnificent parking lot, an open space park and a whole network of trails, including a route to Bald Mountain. The puppies got some great exercise and it set the stage for a good day. A good workout at the gym followed by another little hike with the dogs in the woods surrounding the club, topped off with a brat and a beer at my favorite micro brew pub, Bierwerks ๐Ÿ™‚Herd of Mule Deer

A flash of light and a massive crack of thunder brought my lazy lunch in the outdoor beer garden to a hasty end and I just decided to call it a day. Went home and took a long and badly needed nap. However when I woke up the silly dogs were restless again already and the cats were raising a ruckus for some food. Those cats are pigs! And I was craving ice cream so I decided we’d head out and see if we could photograph some deer before stopping for ice cream.

Sunset on Pikes PeakBut by the time I was halfway through town it was getting pretty dark and I knew it would be even darker where I was planning to look for the deer so I turned around and headed for the ice cream. On the way I caught a view of the peak and it looked like it was going to be a pretty sunset so I quick exited the highway and toodled up to my favorite peak viewing vantage point just as the clouds were starting to take on some color. It turned out to be a beautiful sunset on the peak and down the pass towards Colorado Springs too. Just as the colors were starting to fade over the peak the colors became even more vivid over Gold Hill and when that began to fade a herd of deer walked by. Lol… God was definitely smiling down on me today, a reward just when I was really starting to get discouraged about a recent spate of dull and uninteresting pictures! Today was a victory in the battle to get out and shoot when the voices say, “Don’t bother, it is just going to be a waste of time and gas.”.Sunset on Gold Hilll

Now I have almost 200 pictures to process, that is certainly going to take me awhile. I want to get a jump on it though so I will be up late tonight for sure. The pizza and ice cream I picked up on the way home will definitely lend a hand with that ๐Ÿ™‚ The images can be purchased as prints or as commercial stock by clicking on the links at the left of the screen. Wall art on glossy metal or acrylic sheets and canvas is available along with many cool gift items such as t-shirts, coffee mugs, shopping bags and greeting cards.

The Work

Shooting the pictures is the fun part that makes it all worth while, but for a stock photographer there is a considerable amount of work to be done that isn’t all that much fun.ย  With the capturing of hundreds, even thousands of images comes the job of cataloging and editing and processing. Summertime would seem like the ideal time for the shooting end of photography but it isn’t always, especially during mid day with the sun directly overhead. The intense light and lack of shadows wreaks havoc on an image unless you get out very early in the morning… and today that didn’t happen! Now I hear the echo of thunder rumbling in the valley and it is just a good day to be sitting at the computer ๐Ÿ™‚

Foraging DeerSo, first of all I am tidying up my web site a bit, cleaned up the links on the left and added some clarifying language on where making a click will actually take my readers, that should help ๐Ÿ™‚ Also going through my many past photo shoots searching for images that I overlooked at the time of the shooting. I never shoot jpeg mode, don’t relish the idea of losing 30% of my data upon each click of the shutter. So I always shoot RAW mode and each image requires careful processing to get the exposure, color balance, contrast and shadows and highlights just right. And with my new tools available with the most current Photoshop Cloud I hope to make them even better than before!

This particular image was taken during a horrendous spring blizzard in the Pike National Forest as I ventured out on snowshoes to catch the action. Definitely had to use the AquaTech rain cover for the camera on this one! The snow was really piling up and the animals were having trouble getting to their food source. This doe was reaching for the pine trees as she tried to get food wherever possible, if you look closely you can see the snow piled up on her face as it falls from the pine needles as she eats. I don’t usually see the deer trying to feed on the pine trees so this capture is a bit unusual.

Now the distant rumbling has given way to bright flashes of light followed by loud cracks of thunder.ย  I can also hear the rattle of hailstones on the roof. Glad to be safe inside with my furry four legged friends who seem to be taking the racket in stride. I hope it is raining this hard in Breck and please pray for the firefighters, the people and the wildlife that are being displaced by yet another Colorado forest fire.

A Week of Storms

It has been a stormy couple of weeks in the Pikes Peak region and today was no different. Late May snow two nights in a row has blanketed the mountain in a beautiful mantle of white. I was planning to take a drive down the Phantom Canyon Road this morning but after I awoke to another layer of fresh snow I decided it might be a good idea to look into the road conditions on that particular piece of roadway.

Storm clouds and snow on Pikes Peak ColoradoSo as I was getting ready I checked my phone and a description of the road trip came up on the screen, lol… on DangerousRoads.com. As I read further I decided that a road like that and fresh snow might not be a good idea! So… just another day, loaded up the doggies and headed for the forest for their morning jaunt. As I looked up though, I could see the peak was putting on a major show. Clouds were streaming past the north face of the mountain in an ever changing scene of stormy majesty. I finished with the doggy walk and scurried to my favorite vantage point for peak watching and whiled away a couple of hours photographing the changing scene.Storm Clouds and Fresh Snow on Pikes Peak Colorado

Unfortunately the joy I received from such beauty is tempered by sadness from news of another kind of storm, an ugly and cruel man made storm and grieving in the civilized world caused by the increasing death toll in the terrible terrorist attack at the Manchester concert. I would like to give my sincere prayers and condolences to the victims of this barbaric act. I also wonder how much more blood it will take before we are able to summon the courage to resist this cancer in our midst and to recognize it for what it is, a dangerous and growing movement controlled by the evil one masquerading as God that is completely incompatible with our values and our society.

The two images shown in this post are available exclusively on my personal website at Pixels.com as both print and stock.

Solstice 2016

The new year holiday is meaningless to me, based on nothing but someone’s idea of a chronological date indicating an arbitrary division of time developed centuries ago. However, the Winter Solstice is real, something significant in the alignment of stars, planets, the sun and the earth. It is a mark in time that has a profound effect on my life as I squeak out a life here in the mountains of Colorado. It is the day when the hours of light stop becoming shorter, a day when I can count on more time under the beautiful light of the sun even if it is only a few seconds more than the day before. There is something psychological about knowing that the next day will be longer, perhaps warmer and without a doubt a bit lighter. It is also a day we can count on, a day that we can say without a doubt will be a division in time, the day that identifies an exact moment in time where something changes for the better.

Summit-HikerFor me, in two days it will be the new year… a time to reflect on the previous year and look with hope towards a new one. It is also a time to review whether the previous year will be a year in which I will receive the only thing that really matters, the words of the Almighty, โ€œWell done good and faithful servant.โ€. I could not bear to hear the words in my mind… โ€œOf him will I be ashamed… โ€, speaking of those who were ashamed to speak His Name.

2016 was supposed to be simple, beginning with a trip to REI, my happy place, to invest my yearly dividend on some new bike riding gloves. A year when I was going to prosper, to enjoy life after years of caring for my wife of 25 years as cancer ravaged and eventually destroyed her body. A year that was going to be free from conflict and strife, pain and struggle. A year that began with a great victory, a winter climb to Colorado’s highest peak…

But it was not meant to be so… The war rages on, if not in my life in the lives of others. Early in the year I prayed to the Almighty, let the struggle be over let me just enjoy life now. Fortunately He did not listen to my prayer… the war is not over and neither is my part in it. As I look back it is hard to comprehend that the events in less than 365 days could be confined to just one year. You would have to go back and read all my blogs to gather it all in, but the short story is without my participation it is very possible that two lives and two souls may have been lost. I don’t know for sure, but I hope that as a result of my efforts some suffering may have been averted, a few lives made better and for some there will be new hope and a new chance for a future.

SummitIn spite of the struggles of life, the year also found me in two more of my greatest moments, summiting the three highest peaks in Colorado, counting the winter climb to Mount Elbert my buddies and I also summited Massive and Harvard in the summertime. The west face of Pikes Peak in wintertime has continued to elude us, but also resulted in an experience of a lifetime. Buddy Ralph and I were literally blown over by the strongest wind I have ever experienced… followed by a quick and desperate struggle for survival that will be fuel for stories for years to come! I wish we had some pictures of our frozen faces and beards but the sprint to lower elevations didn’t allow for time for that. However, now when we see the snow blowing a thousand feet in the air over the top of the Peak we can look at each other knowingly… well aware of what life is like on the Peak when that happens!

mariah-steve-summitThe year also yielded another first… my first drive to the summit of Pikes Peak on the Pikes Peak Highway. Barely squeaked that one in on a work day with my friend and co-worker Mariah. A beautiful day down at the base of the Peak was followed by a very cold and windy visit to the summit, but for sure it was a day I will never forget!

But the end of this year finds me tired, injured, and in doubt for my own future. For the next year I must depend on the blessed words of scripture, โ€œBut without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.โ€. I have to know that my efforts this year on behalf of others will not go unrewarded, and that โ€œFor I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.โ€. I have to know that He is watching over me and that there are plans for my life that I am not yet aware of. This year saw the demise of the news company I was writing for as well as any hope for a future with my main photo agency iStock / Getty. I have begun anew with a fledgling portfolio at a newer agency hosted by well known media giant Adobe, but it is only hope at this point. At this time I am out of pictures to upload, out of ideas for new ones and left praying for ideas.

For the new year, I am devoid of ideas for my own plans… spiritually drained and wondering how to start over yet again, but I am confident that the Author of the Future is not taken by surprise, not discouraged and not deterred. I go into the new year knowing that the Blessed Hope has plans I don’t know about and that my best days are before me and not behind… Knowing in my spirit that the next year will be a better year than the last.
