A new year is almost upon us and it seems like a good time to take a look back at 2024, one year in the life of a photographer. Join me in this post as I review a year of pictures in the rugged mountains of Colorado.

Winter Wildlife Photography
Had a good couple of days with some winter wildlife photography using my mirrorless Canon R7. I considered making this post about shooting winter wildlife with a mirrorless camera, so I came up with this... It's just like shooting winter wildlife with a DSLR, so do what you did then. Which is also what I said when DSLR cameras came out. It's just like shooting wildlife with your SLR film camera, so just do what you were doing then. Lol, but then it was pointed out to me that not everyone started shooting wildlife with a 35mm film SLR, and some people never even had a DSLR, so there is that.
The Eagles Return
This is the time of year when I frequently visit the Eleven Mile Fishing Report to check the status of the ice cover. Upon discovering that the reservoir is completely frozen over, I decided to make an early morning visit to investigate the bald eagle nesting pair's return to their winter home in the canyon.
Snowshoeing a Rocky Mountain Blizzard
It was a perfect day to get out and go snowshoeing in a beautiful Rocky Mountain blizzard. It had snowed several inches the night before but the storm had subsided a bit and the plows had time to clear the streets and the highway to the trailhead.
Unboxing Thundering Hooves (Spirit of the West)
It was an exciting day at S.W. Krull Imaging! I received my author copies of my new novel Thundering Hooves (Spirit of the West), and filmed a short video of the unboxing! So if you are ready, please join me while I unbox and present my newest novel!
Autumn on Ektar Film
I was happy to see my fall film pictures arrived in my Dropbox yesterday from Englewood Camera! I shot this batch on my recently acquired and tested Canon EOS Elan 7, and Kodak Ektar 100 film. I chose Ektar for it's' fine grain and brilliant color and contrast. Some say Ektar Color negative film rivals the amazing quality of Kodak Ektachrome slide film.
Thundering Hooves Now at Barnes and Noble
I am pleased to announce that my new wildlife novel, Thundering Hooves (Spirit of the West) is now available for purchase at Barnes and Noble, among other well known outlets!
Sprucing Up for the Holidays
It's been awhile since I have taken a good look at how my wall art gallery is presented, so I thought I'd do a little sprucing up for the holidays. Wall art makes for a great gift, but it's not the only gift my site offers. A beautiful image from my library can be ordered on a wide variety of gift items offered on the site. Click any image, such as this beautiful picture of the wild horses of the Colorado Sand Wash Basin to see all the products that can be ordered!
A Sign of Hope
Summer is over and the mornings are getting colder. Frost and a cold wind on my favorite trail seem to be driving away the early morning tourists and there is a sign of hope. It seems that the deer are returning to their normal habit of drinking from the creek and watering hole at night, and making the climb over the mountain at dawn.
A Time to Adapt
Ten years ago I was sipping my morning brew in my favorite coffee shop staring out at Pikes Peak, when I realized it was time to adapt. My photography business was centered around wedding photography and that genre had changed around me and I had failed to adapt. At the time I had recently moved to the mountains and was surrounded by abundant wildlife. Almost any morning I wished, I could take a short hike and would have the opportunity to photograph deer, elk, bear. fox, coyote, and many other small and fascinating creatures.
