I’m pleased to present a few images from the 95th Donkey Derby Days celebration in Cripple Creek Colorado.
A warm sunny day greeted racers and spectators in the casino district of Cripple Creek Colorado for the 95th annual Donkey Derby Days celebration. Visitors lined Bennet Avenue to cheer in tired runners and donkeys.
Pro donkey runners ran a long race, followed by amateur runners who were running a sprint from the park to the finish line in front of Bronco Billy’s.
Visitors were treated to vendors and music, street buskers and a beer garden. And of course great food served by a large contingent of food vendors!
Incidentally, this was the first festival of this kind that I shot totally with my little Lumix ZS50. In the past I have always lugged along my big rig, complete with monopod. Having to deal with the equipment basically ruined the experience for me, and I eventually gave up on the idea of shooting events for editorial stock image purpose. However, now that I have my online zine to write, I decided to try something new. I have to say, being able to just stick my camera in a pocket in my vest was quite liberating.This little guy is very easy to use, and it takes great pictures!
