Capturing Colorado’s Stunning Sunsets

The conditions looked right for another beautiful sunset over the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range of Colorado, so I loaded up my camera and headed out to the overlook. I arrived with about 20 minutes to wait, and decided it wasn’t going to be that spectacular afterall. So I turned the wheel and headed further into the mountains, hoping to find some wildlife in good light.

Rocky Mountain Sunset

As I rolled past the south face of Pikes Peak, I spotted this magnificent lenticular cloud to the north. Much to my surprise, the cloud was illuminated with all the color that any cloud in the actual sunset might have received.

So I raced around to the north side of the mine where I knew I would get a good view of the mountains to the north, illuminated by this beautiful cloud pattern. I set my camera to manual with a reasonable shutter speed of about a 90th of a second, and then fiddled with the aperture to display the most vivid colors in my electronic viewfinder (EVF)

I have uploaded a number of these beautiful images to the sunset gallery of my website, so please click the link if you would like to see / purchase a print or gift item!

Wildlife Series

If you are concerned about endangered wildlife in the western United States, please consider purchasing my series of historical fiction wildlife novels, as told through my group of fascinating fictional characters. In the first of the series, Spirit of the Wolf, you will learn the story of the most famous Yellowstone wolf of all time. Thundering Hooves tells the exciting story of Picasso, the famous stallion who ruled over the Colorado Sand Wash Basin for over two decades.
