Bighorn Sheep Rut: A Nature Photographer’s Adventure

I was fortunate this weekend to get to take a photo adventure to Waterton Canyon to shoot the beginning of the Bighorn sheep rut, when the rams are down in the valley challenging each other for the right to breed with the herd of ewes.

There wasn’t a whole lot of head butting yet, but a few rams were down by the river testing the ewes for breeding readiness.

Unfortunately the only ramming I was able to photograph was right in front of the shack at the old dam structure. The shack of course ruined the image

There was still plenty of action though, with the energetic young rams chasing each other and the other yearlings around the calm water in the river. This particular lamb put on a very good show, as it sprinted all the way across the pool, splashing water high into the air.

This handsome fellow stood still and posed in front of the beautiful autumn foliage in the background for enough time for me to shoot way too many portraits!

I hope to get back up there next weekend, perhaps a bit earlier in the day to see if I can get some better shots, but here are a few more that I enjoyed from the day, including a juvenile bald eagle and a nice buck mule deer! If you enjoy these images and would like to have a print on your wall, please consider a purchase from my website! Every purchase helps me to continue getting images like these for your viewing enjoyment!

War on Wildlife

Also I’m pleased to announce that Episode Six – Daring Rescue of my new romantic adventure and wildlife historical fiction novel The War On Wildlife, is now ready for your free reading enjoyment! In this episode, Caleb is finally forced to use his special forces skills to accomplish his daring plan to save wild mustangs!

The novel is free to read because I want everyone to understand the war that is being waged against our four footed wild heritage by our own government, and many heartless and greedy ranchers and hunting outfitters.

However if you enjoy this exciting book, I am encouraging donations which help me carry on my work to save our wildlife from destruction and possible extinction.

If you would like to learn more about the characters in the above novel, please consider a purchase of the paperback prequels, in which the battle for wildlife begins and my characters are introduced in detail!

Wildlife Series

If you are concerned about endangered wildlife in the western United States, please consider purchasing my series of historical fiction wildlife novels, as told through my group of fascinating fictional characters. In the first of the series, Spirit of the Wolf, you will learn the story of the most famous Yellowstone wolf of all time. Thundering Hooves tells the exciting story of Picasso, the famous stallion who ruled over the Colorado Sand Wash Basin for over two decades.
