Aspen leaves in many parts of the state of Colorado are reaching peak color this weekend. A brief excursion around the Cripple Creek and Victor area revealed a variety of gold and red colors adorning vast swaths of aspen stands in the 10,000 foot elevation range.

On my way back from a less than successful wildlife adventure in Eleven Mile Canyon, I decided to take an alternate route home that would take me past the best of Highway 67 on the way to Victor, as well as the south face of Pikes Peak. As you can see in this image, some of the leaves are peaking out in beautiful reds, while other areas are stubbornly remaining green.
Unfortunately this isn’t the best situation, as a good wind will remove many of the colored leaves leaving only sparse green areas remaining to turn later.
The road back into the Crags hiking area looked intriguing, so I pulled in for a look. I’ve been wanting to check the road conditions back to Putney Gulch anyway, for a hike at a time yet to be determined. The leaves were beautiful, but the road is a bit rough. I haven’t really found occasion to put my Jeep through the paces though, so I thoroughly enjoyed the drive 🙂

Closer to Victor, the sun drenched south face of the peak has a ways to go. Perhaps the long hours of sunshine available to these trees even as the days become shorter, has delayed the change. As with other parts of the area, you can see a few leaves at the bottom already turning red.
Here are a few more of my favorites from the day. Watch for more to come in my blog, as I had my film camera along with me, which won’t reveal it’s secrets for a few weeks yet, while I finish off the roll and send it in for developing!
