The birds are back in town… at least they are at Manitou Lake. Our short adventure there yesterday yielded, blue heron, American white pelican, red-winged blackbirds, hummingbirds, an osprey, and one ground squirrel looking for a meal.

As we were walking to the lake at sunrise, it quickly became apparent that the great blue herons have returned to Colorado in force. We could see them flying back and forth overhead, and there were also a couple in the water. We readied our cameras, and were soon rewarded with a low flight over the shimmering water.

It was also good to see the American White Pelicans after the long, cold winter. We didn’t see a lot of action from them, but the heron fly by was pretty cool!
Cattails were in bloom, and the hummingbirds were busy gathering nesting materials from the fluff. This little fellow seemed especially curious about my long lens and stayed around several minutes to pose. This is my most vivid capture ever of the bright pink neck plumage!
