My Heart Still Flutters when I’m driving through the canyon and I spot the stunning white head of a majestic bald eagle in a tree ahead. And it was no different on this weeks sunrise Photography Adventure with the Bald Eagles of Park County Colorado.
I let my old jeep roll to a stop, and quietly reach for my camera and big lens in the seat behind me. I take a deep breath and steady my hands as the camera identifies the great raptor and acquires eye focus.
When I’m sure I have a sharp image, the long wait in the icy cold Colorado wind begins. Sometimes I dare switch the camera to video for a few seconds of soothing footage of the sights and sounds of the rushing stream below.
Sometimes the formidable predator will make a dive into the icy water for a fish. Other times, in an explosion of wings and feathers he will take flight in search of a better vantage point.
That’s the moment I don’t want to miss. Will I be looking down, or fiddling with my camera settings at that moment? Or will my frozen fingers and cramped elbows be too numb to capture the action?
One never knows, but after years of experience, I have gotten pretty good at reading the eagle’s mind. He begins to fidget, and look around furtively. I watch and hope I have a few more seconds to shake the numbness out of my hands and arms… and then suddenly, it’s go time!
A little further upstream we encountered this handsome specimen flying low over the stream, directly into the rising sun. The warm morning rays of sunshine are responsible for the golden hue on his beautiful feathers.
