Battling Bighorns

It was quite a day in Waterton Canyon yesterday with a few battling bighorns, but mostly just a normal active day along the South Platte River this time of year.

Bighorn Sheep Herd

We knew it was going to be a good day when the big boys crossed the river to greet the ewes on the other side. When this big ram waded out and stood on a rock, I set my camera for an action shot and waited for the jump. At 15 frames per second, I captured quite a sequence, and this was my favorite of the entire day.

There was a good sized crowd waiting on the other side, and I was able to capture the entire family, watching the action together!

Soon the rest of the rams began making their way across the stream. However the rest didn’t put on quite as exciting a show as the previous one. Mostly they just waded across the rushing water, this one providing a beautiful portrait with a lovely backdrop.

Even though we didn’t see much head banging on this lazy sun soaked morning, the little ones were feeling pretty frisky. Here they are trying to push each other around a little bit, with Dad watching on in the back ground.

I was fortunate that this surly looking ram stopped to pose for a portrait, before continuing on with his feeding and looking for a girlfriend.

We were late getting out of the canyon though. Honest hon, we couldn’t get to our bikes! The herd took quite an interest in our transportation, one thinking a tire might make a nice little meal!

Eventually the crowd dispersed and we were able to make the ride back downstream. I finished off a roll of Kodak Ektar 100 film and took it to the lab for processing. So keep watching the site, in about a week I should have some really nice fall pictures to show!

Rocky Mountain Sunset

Eventually the bighorns lay down for their afternoon nap along the river and we called it a day. But as you can tell by this magnificent sunset, the outing didn’t quit giving until the the sun was completely below the horizon!
