Raptor Morning

Summer is finally behind us and most of the tourists have gone home. Peace and quiet have returned to the Eleven Mile Canyon and as a result, so have our raptors. And of course our local photographers are the beneficiaries of the return to normal in the Colorado Rockies. It was a great morning for Kevin and I as we cruised up and down the South Platte River, photographing bald eagles and our new batch of juvenile osprey.

Bald eagle in the Colorado high country

As we cruised upstream at first light, we encountered this juvenile bald eagle. We watched him for quite some time as he groomed his feathers and prepared for a morning flight. We hope he will find the canyon to his liking and look for a mate with which to expand our local population!

Shortly after our new eagle took flight, we were pleased to find this beautiful juvenile osprey, practicing his fishing skills before embarking upon a 4,000 mile journey to the osprey winter home in South America. In a few years he may return to the canyon to find a mate and build a nest of their own!

Osprey fishing at the South Platte River Colorado

Our new osprey looks like he needs to improve his fishing skills a bit prior to making his southerly journey. We watched him try his luck at fishing three or four times without success. But he’s been living in the canyon for about a month without his parents, so it’s obvious that he’s somehow finding enough food to sustain himself.

A Few More of My Favorites

Here are a few more of my favorite images of the day, including one of the osprey’s unsuccessful dive into the icy waters of the South Platte River.
