To the Rescue

I never cease to be amazed at the breadth of diversity in the bird population that we have in our mountains in Colorado. I was taking my usual hike in the high country when I spotted this little fellow. I thought he looked a bit different than any bird I’d seen before, so even though I didn’t have a great view of him, I took the shot with the hope of running him through my Merlin Bird ID application from Cornell Labs.

American Three-Toed Woodpecker

Turns out the little fellow is another lifetime sighting for my ebird profile, also connected to Merlin and Cornell Labs. By the way, if you are at all interested in birds, I encourage you to join ebird and download the Merlin app! It’s a great way to locate and identify birds and stay in contact with other bird enthusiasts!

Well anyway, this little fellow is an American three-toed woodpecker who’s assigned task is to enter distressed forests and search out pine  beetle and other invasive bugs and eat them! This little fellow may be too little and too late for this severely infected forest but perhaps he will make the place more inhabitable for the new growth now visible on the forest floor.
