December Newsletter

The plan was to write a monthly newsletter, and I think I actually did get a couple written before the whole plan was derailed by events. Somehow through all the trauma I managed to keep shooting, but recently noticed that none of those images had been uploaded to my fine art website or to my stock agencies. No newsletters had been written either, and I have actually put little thought into my photography since the trees began changing colors in the high country in September. But now the skies have cleared over my life, and it’s time to get back to work!

2026 Colorado Wildlife Calendar

One thing that didn’t get overlooked is my 2026 Wildlife Calendar. In addition to full color front and back pages, this full size 8.5×11 calendar is filled with beautiful Colorado wildlife, one image in an appropriate seasonal setting for each month of the year. The date grid comes complete with standard holidays and plenty of room for writing important notes! Order now to assure your copy arrives in plenty of time for the new year!

Bighorn Sheep Herd

Rocky Mountain National Park

Our annual camping trip to photograph the elk rut in Rocky Mountain National Park went well as usual. We tried delaying our trip to early October in hopes of catching the rut in it’s peak, and the result was a slightly different elk behavior than we have experienced in the past. Initial dismay that the animals were hanging around the wrong side of the light ended with delight at silhouette images that were something new and unique that we had never captured before.

Autumn Color

As a renewed interest in film photography continued to develop, I captured many of my fall colors using my old Canon EOS-7 film camera. My favorite film for shooting autumn color is Kodak Ektar 100 ISO, and I was delighted with the results this season. Unexpected vet bills for my dog precluded a planned visit to Kebler Pass, but I still managed to capture some pretty pictures locally.

Instagram

Pikes Peak Autumn

Although I struggled to keep up with my other social media posts, I somehow managed to stay current with my Instagram (@swkrullimaging) uploads. For my followers who just want to see the pretty pictures, my Instagram is probably the most comprehensive collection of my best pictures that I can offer. Feel free to follow my work there!

Substack

My nascent Substack (@StevenWKrull) presence continues to grow, and provide a venue for more personal posts that I have been reluctant to post on other social media sites. My serial romantic adventure novel, The War on Wildlife is coming along nicely and growing in popularity. My recent episode, Thanksgiving Surprise, was a surprise to me as well! Within one day of it’s publication on Substack, I almost instantly recorded 65 reads from my followers there! The next exciting episode will be available next weekend, followed by a special Christmas episode the weekend before the holiday.

Our Eagle Pair

Bald Eagle

Much to our delight, our bald eagle nesting pair has returned to Eleven Mile Canyon. Although they haven’t spent much time in the canyon, probably due to the warm fall and extensive open water for them to fish in, they have both been spotted at the nest. My theory is that they return to the nest during the annual migration to assure that an opportunistic traveling eagle doesn’t steal their home.

Film Photography

I have experienced great joy lately carrying around my two film cameras. Of course there is the Canon EOS-7, my most modern film camera that I mentioned earlier, and my favorite camera of all time, my old Canon A-1. I often keep it with me at the ready, loaded with a roll of Ilford Delta monochrome film. I’ll be completing a roll of black and white soon, so stay tuned for the results! This particular image of the Garden of the Gods was captured using my EOS-7 with Fuji 200 film. I was very pleased with the reasonably economical Fuji 200, and will be using it extensively in the future! I’m also experimenting this week with a yellow filter on my monochrome captures. I’m eager to see and pass on the results!

Looking Ahead

Bald Eagle Nest

Cold and snow are forecast for this week and I’m confident that the reservoirs will be frozen over by the weekend. That means the local raptors will be spending a lot more time along the banks of the South Platte River where they can be more easily located and photographed.

I’m also looking forward to the new snow we are supposed to be getting, in the hope of having enough to snowshoe in! I noticed on my daily trek through the high country today, that I could have benefitted from my micro spikes. I had to turn around early to avoid ice on the trail next to a steep dropoff. Winter is my favorite season for both hiking and photography, and I’m looking forward to sharing my winter wonderland with my followers!
