My project for the day was a visit to the Colorado Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range to shoot a panoramic image of the magnificent block fault range with a winter storm and a fog bank rolling in. It took me two days to capture all the images for this post, including the fog bank and deer herd on the second day.

So I hiked to the summit of the overlook where I knew I would have an unobstructed view of the entire range. It’s hard to tell when you are looking at it, but the range runs north and south, so when you are looking at it from the northeast, the horizon appears skewed, with the peaks on the right actually being further away.
I shot six images vertically, being careful to retain the same exposure parameters throughout the sequence. On the computer in Adobe Photoshop, I opened the six images and selected the Photomerge option. From there you just pick the appropriate stitching option that suits your images and tell the program to merge the open files. Photoshop does the rest!
As I was hiking back down the trail, I spotted a herd of mule deer running across the plateau before me. I set my Canon R7 to a 1000th of a second and focused my 400mm lens on the galloping animals. I felt this image showed he best spread of animals, but of course I kept shooting as the majestic beasts galloped past.

And here are the deer across the valley as they headed into the dense forest on the other side. I always feel privileged when an amazing scene like this unfolds before me. Soon they disappeared over the hill and I returned to my old Jeep to look over my captures.
Then of course I rewarded myself with some biscuits and gravy at the Gold Camp Bakery in Victor 🙂 I’m looking forward to the Victor Artist Coop opening in the spring! Be sure to stop in this summer and view my work, including a bunch of framed pictures of local scenes, and of course my books!
